“You earn wages only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” Haggai 1:6
540 years before Jesus arrived as the babe in Bethlehem, God’s children were experiencing a common financial problem…more month than money!
The Bible refers to this condition as a “purse with holes”. I will refer to it as “leaks in our bank account.” The message will remain true, but terms have been updated for modern day “ease of understanding.”
Bank Account Leak #1: Seek Ye First The Kingdom Of Self
Haggai 1:2-4 “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘These people say, the time has not yet come for the LORD’s house to be built.’ Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: ‘Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?’”
These people had built a “self-first” lifestyle instead of a “God-first” lifestyle. This always creates a leak in one’s bank account.
Bank Account Leak #2: Impulsive Living and Spending
Haggai 1:5 “give careful thought.”
God’s children had not given careful thought to how they lived. This suggests a lifestyle of impulsive spending.
Bank Account Leak #3: Playing the Blame Game
Haggai 1:5 “give careful thought to your ways.”
These people were paying attention to the wrong things. They did not want to look at their own ways. They were looking at the ways of others. This leads to blaming others or circumstances for our problems. Drip…drip…drip…
Bank Account Leak #4: Ineffective Work
Haggai 1:6 “You have planted much, but harvested little.”
The Bible commends hard work, but never commends ineffective work. These people were working hard, but getting disappointing results. When we are working on our financial lives, but encountering disappointment, it is time to make some changes.
Bank Account Leak #5: Lack of Integrity
Haggai 1:6 “You drink, but never have your fill.”
Apparently, these people were not really drinking. Instead, they were “appearing” to drink. They appeared one way on the outside, but were experiencing something completely different on the inside. A lack of congruency between our outward appearance and our inner reality is called hypocrisy. This always results in a leak in our bank account.
Bank Account Leak #6: Delayed Action
Haggai 1…Context
God commanded his children to rebuild the temple 18 years prior to the time of Haggai. This delayed obedience caused God to remove his blessing from their lives. Can you say “Bank Account Leak”?
Bank Account Leak #7: Overindulgence
Haggai 1:6 “You eat, but never have enough.”
Even after eating, these people wanted more. They had not learned to be content. The word satisfaction was not in their dictionary. This applies to more than food and is quite costly.
Bank Account Leak #8: Pride
Haggai 1:6 “You put on clothes, but are not warm.”
They had forgotten that the primary purpose of clothing was to keep them warm. Instead, they were wearing clothes for other reasons such as serving their unhealthy pride. Anytime one forgets that the primary purpose of clothing is for warmth, a bank account leak is created.
Bank Account Leak #9: Debt
Haggai 1:6 “You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”
Debt is not something new. It was prevalent in Old Testament times. I know of no better description of debt than a “purse with holes”. Many people spend hundreds (or thousands) of dollars each month paying interest on their loans. Indeed “the borrower is a slave to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7).
Bank Account Leak #10: Foolishness
Haggai 1:12 “And the people feared the LORD.”
According to Proverbs 1:7,”…the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” In the first 11 verses of Haggai, the people did not fear the Lord. They only started fearing the Lord in verse 12.
Therefore prior to verse 12, they were not making wise financial decisions. They were making foolish decisions.
We will look at each of these in detail in upcoming posts.

Bruce here. I want your comments. This is not a “static” website. It is a group conversation. Love ya’ll (I’m from Texas).
Loved these wise words, full of scripture, my only question….”How do you stop the leaks?”
Hi Alyssa!!
Great question. I will answer soon.
I am glad you re getting the snow because I am not wanting it here!
Good thoughts and ideas. I think you are talking about a lot of people including christians. My wife an I have issues in several area as well but we are on a great road to being debt free.
My wife and I, will be Debt free once we have the house paid off. We have reasied our children and my wife has returned to work to help us by appling what she makes toward the prinicipal of the house mortage. We are just above 30,000 and projected payoff is in a year and a half.
We are excited to see God at work through your keep sharing the thoughts that gad gives to you Bruce! (We met you at the Evangelical Free District Conference in Nebraska in April 2008, I think)

Bruce: I loved the picture with the snow. You were just at our church, View Acres a couple of weeks ago. We throughly enjoyed the seminar. May you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.
Great reminders, thanks! challenging…..
We probably all experience all 10 of these at varying times if we are all honest with ourselves. Thanks for the wisdom!
When there are ten leaks in the dike it takes the attention of ten fingers to plug them until repairs can be made! Amazing to me is how when we begin the process and get one repaired, God grants momentum for the repair of the other leaks until all are plugged. Thankfully, God blesses this divine work with divine outcome, and divine support to keep the dike strong. Thanks, Bruce. JEFF
(May I run this in my newsletter, giving proper credit, and an invitation to sign up for your Friday gifts?)
Wow Bruce, eye opening! Lord help us to be doers of your word and not hears only!
Bruce,
As always, the Lord continues to use you to share biblical counsel, godly wisdom, and good ol’ common sense! Our folks are still benefitting from your time here with us when you taught us all about Conquering Debt God’s Way! Thanks for the latest Friday Financial Freebie! I learn something new every time I open an e-mail from you!
Blessings to you, my friend!
great reminders bruce! greetings from omaha – remember us at emmanuel fellowship? i believe your daughter was playing vb while you were here
merry christmas!!!
We are debt free after going to your seminar at FBC,Blue Springs,Mo.Thanks to you but more to God for this freedom. There is more to give to others.
I must say I have never read the book of Haggai. What was stated is so-o-o-o factual. We have to stop being phoney and face reality. We don’t live to keep up with the Jones’s – that’s world thinking. I am adjusting my wardrobe for climate while keeping beauty in the clothes. My parents & aunts all sewed their clothes out of necessity. I too sew out of necessity which turns out to be a plus. Instead of having to spend mucho money on tall size clothes, I spend little money on fabric and lots of time on creativity, achieving a great look and fit without the cost. Wish San Antonio could have received that much snow. Next time!
Thanks for the words of wisdom. Now I just have to figure out how to apply this to my life and spending habits.
I saw you at New River in Weatherford, Tx. this past year with friends. Thoroughly enjoyed your seminar. I’m still urging the pastor at my home church to contact you to do a seminar for us.
You and yours have a Blessed Christmas.

Excellent list to help us take inventory of ourselves and plan the new year.
The longest that my husband and I have been in debt in 25 years of marriage is 30 days (we pay off all bills at the end of the month or before they’re due).
This financial freedom has protected us when we’ve had many chronic health problems in our family, that probably would have devesatated many families. While being completely debt free is wonderful and is a credit to God’s mercy, kindness and miraculous intervention, we still have other areas to grow in. Pride and self-serving easily creeps in.
Thanks so much for your bold ministry. I’ve heard you three times in the Wichita ks area, and hope to hear your teaching and your living example again.
Happy New Year!
Marce Mossberg
Thank to your Seminars, prayer and determination we are working toward clearing the debt and should be Debt Free in 3 years. Thanks for the comments from Haggai. The book needs to be read daily.
Good points every one, for my wife and I it all started with honoring God first with our offerings and realizing all we have is a gift from Him.
True words of wisdom. Seeking God’s kingdom FIRST solves leaks of all kinds!
Thank you for these words of wisdom especially now while going through a divorce after 26 years. I haven’t worried about how much I spent or what I spent it on. I will be a better steward from now on.
Bruce,
Your insight and discernment of God’s Word continues to feed and bless. I appreciate the timeliness of your sharing and the timelessness of God’s Word when it comes to our finances. Thank you, once again, for your clear biblical address of these matters. May God continue to bless your ministry in the days to come as He utilizes your talents for His Kingdom.
Praising Him for you!
GREAT DISCIPHERING !!! All 10 of these leaks are present in all budgets some more than others. We should all take the advise Bruce is giving us, I know I am. Thank you Bruce and may 2010 be a great year for us all. Blessings to all.
The author of godsmoneycoach.com has written an excellent article. You have made your point and there is not much to argue about. It is like the following universal truth that you can not argue with: The people most fearful of crime in big cities, don’t live in big cities Thanks for the info.
